5th Annual Defenders of Mental Health 5K
The Defenders of Mental Health 5K is an annual event held in Savannah, Georgia, organized by the Brett J Morris Avenger Foundation. The event aims to raise awareness for mental health challenges and PTSD while supporting families in the military, first responder, and youth communities. The foundation was established in memory of Brett J Morris, a 20-year Army veteran.
Participants can choose from several event categories:
- 5K Run/Walk
- 5K Ruck March
- 5K Virtual Run/Walk/Ruck
- FREE KIDS RUN (open to ages 5-9)
The event features a "Dress as a Defender" theme, where participants are encouraged to wear costumes representing superheroes, real-life heroes such as healthcare providers and military personnel, or faith-inspired characters. Related activities include a costume contest with multiple categories, a shield wall photo station, and a prayer shield wall where participants can leave intentions.
Registered participants receive a commemorative coin upon crossing the finish line, along with a t-shirt or tank top and a swag bag for those who register by the specified deadline. The event also provides snacks, drinks, and one raffle ticket per entrant. Awards and certificates are presented to top finishers across various age groups, with specific prizes like footwear and gift cards for the leading male, female, and ruck participants.
Proceeds from the event go toward community scholarships and support for families experiencing loss or tragedy. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
