Dead Cow Gully Backyard Ultra

The Dead Cow Gully Backyard Ultra is an endurance event held on a 1,600 acre cattle property in rural Queensland. Located 11 km north of Nanango, the course is situated on a 6th generation family property that features timbered ridges and creek flats. The race takes its name from a local gully where a beast was previously discovered tangled in tree roots following a flash flood.

The event follows the traditional backyard ultra format. Participants must complete a specific loop within one hour, every hour, until only one runner remains. A runner is eliminated if they fail to finish a loop in time, fail to arrive at the starting line for the next loop, or choose to withdraw from the competition.

The course features the following distances based on the number of completed loops:

  • 6.706 km (single loop)
  • 40.2 km (6 loops)
  • 100.5 km (15 loops)
  • 160.9 km (24 loops)

The landscape includes the historic IONA homestead, which is over 110 years old. The environment remains a working property where cattle roam across the terrain. Participants continue running the circuit until the final person completes a solo loop, at which point the race concludes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
