David Staff Memorial Fell Race
The event is a Category AS fell race on the West Pennine Moors above Darwen, Lancashire. The course covers approximately 6 km with about 305 m of ascent. It is organised by the local running club and is held in memory of a young club member who died after collapsing during a race.
Race registration is based at The Kiosk in Sunnyhurst Woods and the finish remains at The Bandstand. The current route starts on the main path opposite The Kiosk, turns left at the bandstand, leaves the wood via the Lychgate carpark next to The Sunnyhurst pub, then proceeds toward Waterman’s Cottage and up the concrete path to Darwen Tower before looping on the moors. The descent returns into the woods via the pub and finishes at the bandstand.
The event sets a minimum age of 14 years. Entry fees listed include reduced rates for FRA members and a higher rate for non members. Entries are managed through an online entry system and there is a published entry period for the event.
The organisers run the race to raise funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young to support heart screening for young people. Screening associated with this fundraising has identified heart defects in over 60 people, and fundraising totals have exceeded £100,000.
