Event overview
The Dartmoor Winter Traverse is a fully supported south-to-north challenge across Dartmoor on Saturday 21 February 2026. There are two course options: 50 km and 30 km. The event is open to runners and walkers and is organised as a challenge rather than a race. Cut off times at the final checkpoint are described as generous.
Route and support
The route runs through remote moorland and is almost entirely off road. It passes Red Lake and the sources of the rivers Erme and Plym, includes a break in Princetown, and continues via Roos Tor, Tavy Cleave and Chat Tor before joining the Rattlebrook dismantled railway and descending to Meldon. Some sections cross wet ground. The route is mainly across open moor with no way markings. A GPX file will be available and the route can be used alongside paper maps OL 28 Dartmoor (1:25,000) or BMC Dartmoor (1:40,000). Qualified Mountain Leaders and experienced guides will be on the course to assist with navigation and provide first aid. Coach transport from the end to the start can be booked separately.
