Event overview

The Dartmoor Winter Traverse is a winter challenge across Dartmoor from south to north on Saturday 21 February 2026. The event is organised by Climb South West and finishes at Meldon Village Hall. It is a fully supported, predominantly off-road route that passes Red Lake, the sources of the rivers Erme and Plym, Princetown, Roos Tor, Tavy Cleave and Chat Tor before following the Rattlebrook dismantled railway into Meldon. The route is approximately 50 km (about 30 miles) and runs mainly across open moorland without way markings.

  • 50 km
  • 30 km

Both distances are open to runners and walkers. The 30 km option follows the same line as the 50 km from Princetown.

Course and logistics

The event is described as a challenge rather than a race. Qualified Mountain Leaders and experienced guides will be on the course to assist with navigation and provide first aid; participants may run or walk with guides or independently. Maps are recommended - OL 28 Dartmoor (1:25,000) or BMC Dartmoor (1:40,000) - and a GPX file and Outdoor Active route are provided. Entry fees listed are £91.00 for the 50 km and £66.00 for the 30 km; the entry fee includes GPS tracker hire. Coach transport from the finish to the start is available to book separately. Cut-off times at the final checkpoint are described as generous and transport to the end will be available for those unable to complete the distance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
