Event overview
The Dartmoor Winter Traverse on 21 February 2026 is a fully supported south-to-north challenge across Dartmoor, organised by Climb South West Ltd. The finish is at Meldon Village Hall. The event is open to runners and walkers and is described as a challenge rather than a race. Cut off times at the final checkpoint are generous. Entry fees include GPS tracker hire.
Routes and course details
- 50 km course, almost entirely off road, approximately 50 km (30 miles).
- 30 km option from Princetown to Meldon.
The route crosses remote open moorland with little or no way marking. It passes Red Lake and the sources of the rivers Erme and Plym, includes a break in Princetown, then continues to North Moor locations such as Roos Tor, Tavy Cleave and Chat Tor, picks up the Rattlebrook dismantled railway and descends to Meldon. Weather, short daylight hours and difficult underfoot terrain are noted factors in February. A GPX file and Outdoor Active route are available; organisers recommend using these alongside OL 28 Dartmoor (1:25,000) or BMC Dartmoor (1:40,000) maps. Qualified Mountain Leaders and experienced guides will support navigation and provide first aid on course. Coach transport from the finish to the start can be booked separately. Entries open 2 May 2025 and close 12 February 2026; fees listed are £91 for the 50 km and £66 for the 30 km. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
