Trail Run at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve
The Darter Dash is an annual trail running event held at the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve in Pinson, Alabama. Organized by the Birmingham Ultra Trail Society (BUTS), the event takes place across a landscape known for its biological diversity. The preserve protects a specific stretch of water that serves as the exclusive habitat for the Vermilion Darter. All proceeds from the race are used to fund educational programs within the nature preserve.
The race offers two distinct distances:
- 10 km
- 5 km
The course primarily consists of trails that feature moderate elevation changes. While the majority of the route follows natural paths through the woods and along stretches of Turkey Creek, a short portion of both the 5 km and 10 km races takes place on pavement. Participation for the event is limited to a total of 125 runners across both distances.
Participants can access a packet pickup service on the morning of the event to collect bibs and race materials. The event features specific amenities for runners, including aid station supplies at the finish line and a post-race pancake breakfast with mimosas. After the run, an optional activity called the Splash Challenge allows individuals to tube down a waterfall near the finish line. An award ceremony is held to recognize top performers in several categories, including male, female, master, grand master, and youth divisions.
