Damon S. Young Memorial Race : Tunkhannock, PA
The Damon S. Young Memorial Race is a multi-distance running event held on private property in Centermoreland near Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. Distances offered include:
- Half Marathon (two laps of the 10k course)
- 10K run
- 5K run/walk
- 2 mile fun walk
The course uses dirt roads, mowed grass paths, fields and wooded trails. Races begin and end on the family property and start with a downhill section that leads into grass paths and a half mile of dirt road. The 5K route includes roughly a mile of trails through the woods; the 10K continues further on trails and fields before returning on the dirt road. The half marathon is two laps of the 10K course. Each 10K lap contains about 750 to 850 feet of climbing, giving the half marathon roughly 1500 to 1700 feet of total climbing.
Half marathon runners can expect two water only stations and three fully stocked aid stations with fruit, pretzels, chips, candy, water and soda. The 2 mile fun walk is not timed, does not use bib numbers, and follows Pine Ridge Road to a turnaround about one mile out, making it suitable for strollers.
Awards are given to overall male and female winners in the 5K, 10K and half marathon. Registered participants are provided food after the event and event merchandise and raffle baskets are available for purchase. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
