Damascus Freedom 5K : 17th annual
The Damascus Freedom 5K is an annual community event held at Damascus Regional Park on 9/12/2026 to remember the events of 9/11 and to raise funds for organizations that support troops, their families, and those who return home wounded or disabled. The event includes a main 5K race and a Kid's Quarter Mile FREEdom Fun Run. Participation in the kids' run and all kid activities is free and untimed.
The 5K course runs north along the Magruder Branch Trail, turns left at Sweepstakes Road and Cutsail, follows a short grassy and wooded path, then returns to the trail and the park. Event features include music provided by K-Sef Entertainment, a playground, a magic show by Drew Blue Shoes, balloon items for children, and food vendors including Jimmie Cone and J&P.
Race proceeds benefit multiple nonprofit organizations. A portion of proceeds will support The National Vietnam War Museum, and Vietnam veterans are specifically invited. Worn US flags may be brought to check in for dignified retirement by Damascus American Legion Post 171.
The event began in 2010 to unite the community and raise funds for Disabled American Veterans. Over the years it has added beneficiaries and activities while maintaining a community and remembrance focus.
