Event Overview
The Damascus Freedom 5K is an annual community event held at Damascus Regional Park. Now in its 17th year, the event serves as a commemorative gathering to remember the events of 9/11 and to honor those who have served in the military and as first responders. The event includes organized running activities and a variety of community entertainment.
Distances and Activities
The event features two primary running distances:
- 5K Race
- Quarter Mile Kid's FREEdom Fun Run
The 5K course follows the Magruder Branch Trail heading North, turns onto Sweepstakes Road and Cutsail, and transitions through a grassy and wooded path before returning to the trail and finishing back at the park. The Kid's Fun Run is an untimed event.
Event Features
Participants can take part in various activities throughout the morning. The schedule incorporates moments of silence to mark specific times related to the events of September 11, 2001. On-site amenities and entertainment include:
- A pre-race warmup and stretch session.
- Live music and a magic show for attendees.
- A playground and dedicated activities for children, such as balloon art.
- Food and refreshments provided by local vendors.
- A flag retirement collection where participants can bring worn US flags to be handled by the local American Legion.
Registration and Participation
Registration is open to the general public, with specific "hero" pricing available for first responders (police, fire, and rescue) and military members. Vietnam veterans are also invited to participate with dedicated registration options. Race proceeds are distributed to several organizations that support active-duty troops, their families, and wounded or disabled veterans, including the National Vietnam War Museum and Disabled American Veterans.
Packet pickup is available the day before the race at a local sports facility in Damascus, as well as on the morning of the event. All timing chips are distributed on-site at the park. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
