Cumbrian Traverse

The Cumbrian Traverse is a professionally guided, fully supported high-level route across the Lake District. The route begins at Broughton Mills in Dunnerdale and finishes in Keswick, covering 50 km with approximately 3,500 m of ascent and summiting 21 fells. Fells on the route include Great Stickle, Stickle Pike, Caw, White Maiden, Brown Pike, Dow Crag, The Old Man of Coniston, Swirl How, Great Carrs, Cold Pike, Crinkle Crags, Bowfell, Esk Pike, Great End, Great Gable, Green Gable, Brandreth, Grey Knotts, High Spy, Maiden Moor and Cat Bells.

Organisers provide low-ratio guiding and supervision with a maximum guiding ratio of 1:6. The event includes food and drink at two refuelling points, a support vehicle that can collect participants who withdraw, and transport from Keswick to the start. Pace is described as a slow run with walking on all hills and technical sections; organisers may split participants into faster and slower groups.

Safety staff are qualified Mountain Leaders and Mountaineering Instructors, with run leaders who are experienced ultramarathon runners. The route may be modified if weather conditions are not suitable. For the 2026 offering the event is initially open to runners only, with potential walking options in subsequent years. The organiser recommends prior experience such as completing the Welsh 3000s over two days or a comparable 50 km event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
