Cuilcagh Camino 2026
The Cuilcagh Camino is a self guided walking event based in Swanlinbar. Registration takes place in St Mary's Hall, Swanlinbar, and all routes start and finish at the same hall. Route maps will be provided and directional signage and stewards will be in place along the paths.
Three routes are offered:
- Long route: approx 30 km
- Medium route: approx 25 km
- Short route: approx 16 km
The long route traverses the lower foothills and plateau of Cuilcagh mountain and begins with a gentle climb toward the townland of Alteen. The medium route follows similar ground but omits the Alteen loop. Both longer routes pass several archaeological sites that have been recently discovered or reinterpreted. The short route follows the foothills of Cuilcagh mountain and accesses scenic local terrain. None of the routes link into the Stairway to Heaven.
Surfaces include tarred byroads, gravel tracks, open boggy hillside or mountain, and grassy trails. Parts of the routes cross open mountain ground where weather can change quickly and the ground may be uneven and slippery. Proper hiking boots, rain gear and water are compulsory. Spare layers, snacks and sweets are strongly advisable. Refreshments and toilet stations will be provided at intervals.
Entry fee is €60 excluding booking fee and includes the respective route map, refreshments, hot food at the finish and a commemorative Cuilcagh Camino T shirt. The event is organised by members of Cuilcagh Ramblers and local volunteers with proceeds donated to local causes and charities. Participants must be over 18, have a good level of fitness and previous long distance hiking experience. Tickets are not transferable or refundable. No dogs permitted.
