Cross Country Sundown Showdown
The Cross Country Sundown Showdown is a 5k event taking place on July 17, 2026. It is the second annual edition of the event.
Registration and bib pickup occur at the Carterville Community Center on 120 N Greenbriar Rd. The race starts and finishes behind this community center. The course is cross-country style, described as mostly grass with some gravel and paved sections.
The event is structured as a team competition resembling a high school-style cross country meet. Teams consist of 3 to 5 runners, with the top 3 runners scoring for each team. Participants without a full team can receive help forming one on race day. Running solo is also an option.
Awards are given to the top 20 female and top 20 male runners individually. Team awards are presented for the top team in each division: Male, Female, and Mixed. Team scoring adds up the finishing positions (where 1st place = 1 point, 2nd place = 2 points, etc.) of the team's top three runners; the team with the lowest total score wins.
The course is marked with paint at each mile: red for mile 1, white for mile 2, and blue for mile 3. A lead vehicle guides runners along the route. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
