Cowboy Tough Adventure Race
Cowboy Tough is an outdoor adventure race held at Curt Gowdy State Park near Cheyenne, Wyoming (1264 Granite Springs Rd). The event spans a multi-day weekend in early August and includes both long and short format races run in a rogaine style.
Races are offered in two primary time formats: 50 hour and 8 hour. Each format includes solo and team divisions, with team sizes listed up to four people. There are also trek-only options available for some 8 hour divisions and designated volunteer categories for each race format.
The race uses multiple disciplines: mountain bike, trek (foot), and paddle. The course crosses mountain terrain, granite outcroppings, and high plains and incorporates flowing and technical singletrack, extended trekking sections through rugged terrain, and scenic paddling segments. The event follows a points-based, choose-your-route model in which teams select checkpoints, prioritize scoring, and may bypass optional sections to shape their strategy.
Affiliations for the event include the USARA Race Series, the Rocky Mountain Adventure Race Series, and the ARWS North American Series. The format emphasizes navigation, teamwork, and route choice rather than a single fixed course distance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
