Event overview
The Charleston Distance Run takes place on Saturday, September 5, 2026, in Charleston, West Virginia. The event offers the following races:
- 15-mile race
- 3-person 15-mile relay
- 5K run/walk
The 15-mile race is described as America’s only 15-mile race. The 5K course is described as flat. The relay is run in three segments of 3, 5, and 7 miles, with exchanges in the middle of the South Side Bridge. Participants must arrange their own transportation to and from the relay exchange.
Course and race logistics
All races start at the West Virginia State Capitol at 1900 Kanawha Boulevard E. and finish at University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field on a rubber race track. The 15-mile course passes through downtown, hillside neighborhoods, and along the riverfront, and includes a hill on Route 119 labeled "Capital Punishment Hill."
Timing is electronic: a one-time timing strip tag on the reverse of the bib provides chip and gun times. There is a four-hour time limit for the 15-mile race. Aid stations with water and Gatorade are placed approximately every 1 to 2 miles on the 15-mile and 5K courses; the 15-mile course has 12 stations plus start and finish stations. Portajohns are available at the start and along the 15-mile course. Baby strollers are allowed in the 5K only; pets are not permitted. After the race, water and refreshments are provided at Laidley Field. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
