Chariots of Fire Beach Race : event overview
Chariots of Fire Beach Race takes place on West Sands in St Andrews and comprises a simple out and back course run entirely on sand and, depending on the tide, through surf. The course is described as largely flat with the turn at roughly halfway clearly marked by feather flags and a piper. Marshalling is minimal and competitors are asked to run clockwise at the turn to avoid oncoming runners.
The event includes chip timing so every finisher is recorded. There is a one hour cut off for the 5 km. Post race provisions for finishers have included a medal, a fudge doughnut and a complimentary beer for those over 18, with soft drinks offered for younger participants. Gluten free and vegan options are available. There are no water stations on course; a limited supply of water is held for first aid and participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable cup or bottle.
Practical details include registration in a marquee on West Sands adjacent to the Dook Cafe, council toilets nearby, additional portaloos and a disabled access toilet, and free parking behind the sand dunes with marshals directing vehicles. Official race T shirts can be ordered for collection on race day and will not be posted out. Proceeds after costs support RNLI and local charities Families First and Home Start.
