Challenge for Charities : Lander, Wyoming
The Challenge for Charities in Lander, Wyoming is a community fundraising event organized by the Lander Community Foundation that includes a half marathon, a 5K, and a 1 Mile Mad Dash for children. The races take place in Lander with courses that feature town streets and nearby foothill scenery.
Distances
- Half Marathon: continuous gradual climb on Baldwin Creek Road then descent on Squaw Creek Road.
- 5K: follows the Riverwalk, goes through town to McMannis and City Park, then joins the half marathon finish on 5th Street.
- 1 Mile Mad Dash: out-and-back on Main Street; kid-focused and may be accompanied by one adult if needed.
All participants receive a finisher medal. Awards are given to the top three overall men and women in both the half marathon and the 5K, with an awards ceremony held soon after the top finishers complete the race. Race packet pickup is encouraged prior to the event at Lander Bake Shop on July 3 to avoid race-morning lines; morning pickup is also available but new registrations are not accepted on race day.
The event is part of Lander’s July 4 community celebrations, which include a parade and fireworks and tend to draw large crowds. Safety guidelines note that dogs are discouraged and must be leashed if present, wheeled devices such as roller skates and scooters are not allowed on course, and strollers and wheelchairs are welcome. A limited scholarship program offers need-based registration discounts with a set application period and limited funds. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
