Event overview

The South Downs Way 50km® is a 50 km non-stop trail race held on 13 June 2026. The event is the second running of this distance and is part of the World Trail Majors - Short Series. The course starts at Matterley Bowl and finishes in the event field at Queen Elizabeth Country Park, finishing below Butser Hill.

Race details

The route follows the chalk ridgeway and the South Downs Way National Trail for much of the distance. The course length is 50 km (31 mi) with approximately 4000 ft (1200 m) of climb. Terrain is about 80% trail and 20% road. The organiser provides four stocked aid stations, full medical support, and course markings. Runners must finish within a 9 hour cut-off. Pacers and crew are not permitted.

Entry and logistics

Entry opens 12 July 2025 and entries close 5 June 2026. The entry fee is listed as £80 (UKA discounted) or £82 unaffiliated; available places are limited (400 starters noted). Minimum age is 20 years. Facilities include overnight camping at the start, finish-line food and hot drinks, live tracking, and a finishers medal with trophies for category placings. Mandatory kit includes a charged mobile phone, water carriage of at least 1 litre, a survival blanket, a waterproof jacket, and a cup; a one hour time penalty may apply for missing items.
