South Downs Way 50km
The South Downs Way 50km is a nonstop 50 km foot race through the South Downs National Park held on 12 June 2027. The route follows the chalk ridgeway and the South Downs Way National Trail for the majority of the course, remaining entirely within the national park. The course starts at Matterley Bowl just outside Winchester and finishes in the Event Field at Queen Elizabeth Country Park beneath the descent from Butser Hill.
The route includes approximately 1150 m (3800 ft) of ascent and is made up of about 80% trail and 20% road. Runners must complete the course within a nine hour overall cut off; there are additional intermediate cut offs at aid stations.
Support and logistics include four well stocked aid stations offering a range of food and drink options for various dietary requirements, full medical cover with roving teams and a static finish medic, a fully marked course using Centurion ribbons and marker arrows, live tracking, and a downloadable GPX route file. Race services listed for entrants include overnight camping at the start, finish line food and hot drinks, a finishers medal, and category prizes for podium and age group winners.
The event has mandatory kit checks and specifies required items such as a charged mobile phone, minimum 1 litre water capacity, a survival blanket, a waterproof jacket with sealed seams, and a personal cup.
