South Downs Way 50 km
The South Downs Way 50 km is a nonstop foot race held entirely within the South Downs National Park. The route follows the chalk ridgeway and the majority of the course is on the South Downs Way National Trail, finishing in the event field at Queen Elizabeth Country Park after a descent from Butser Hill.
The distance is 50 km (31 miles) with approximately 3800 ft / 1150 m of elevation gain. Terrain is largely trail with some road sections, listed as 80% trail and 20% road. The course is fully marked and supported by four stocked aid stations and full medical cover. There are kit checks during the event and a mandatory kit list that includes a charged mobile phone, minimum 1 litre water capacity, a survival blanket and a waterproof jacket. A one hour time penalty applies for missing mandatory items.
The event uses live tracking and provides finish line food and hot drinks. Runners may deposit a finish bag up to 50 litres at registration and overnight camping is available at the start line. No pacers or crew are permitted on the route. Entries for 2027 open at 1900 on Sunday 19 July 2026. The entry fee is £85 (£87 unaffiliated). There are no qualification standards; minimum age is 20 as per UK Athletics rules. The published cut off for the race is nine hours. The event is held under a UK Athletics permit through the TRA.
