Event Overview
The South Downs Way 50 is an ultramarathon foot race covering 50 miles (81 km) along the South Downs Way National Trail. The course begins in Worthing and travels eastward to finish in Eastbourne. This event serves as the first race in the 50 Mile Grand Slam series. The terrain consists of approximately 85% trail and 15% road, featuring a total elevation gain of 5,700 feet (1,750 meters).
Route Details
The race starts at Hillbarn Recreation Ground in Worthing. Runners initially navigate six miles of chalk footpaths and bridleways, climbing to join the South Downs Way at Chanctonbury Ring. From there, the route follows the National Trail toward Eastbourne. At Alfriston, the course follows the bridleway over Windover Hill to Jevington rather than the Seven Sisters coastal path. The race concludes with a final lap of the athletics track at Eastbourne Sports Club.
Logistics and Support
The event has a strict 13-hour cut-off time, with additional interim cut-offs at individual aid stations. There are seven well-stocked aid stations along the route providing hydration, gels, and various sweet and savoury snacks. While course markings including red and white tape and Centurion arrows are provided, runners are responsible for their own navigation.
Registration Requirements
- Distance: 50 miles
- Qualification: Entrants must have completed at least one marathon distance race within the designated cut-off time between January 1, 2021, and race day.
- Capacity: General registration is limited to 650 places on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Mandatory Gear: Participants must carry specific safety equipment, including a mobile phone, a 1-litre water capacity, a survival blanket, a waterproof jacket with sealed seams, a whistle, two light sources of at least 100 lumens each, warm clothing, and a cup.
