About the race

The South Downs Way 50 is a 50 mile foot race along the South Downs Way National Trail, running from Worthing to Eastbourne. The route starts on chalk footpaths and bridleways, joins the South Downs Way near Chanctonbury Ring and follows the SDW to Eastbourne, finishing with a lap of the athletics track at Eastbourne Sports Club. The course includes about 5700 feet (1750 m) of climb and is composed of roughly 85% trail and 15% road.

This is the 15th annual running of the event and the first race in the 2027 50 Mile Grand Slam of four events. The race is held under a UK Athletics permit through the TRA. There are 650 places available on open registration and entrants must meet the qualification standard of a completed marathon within that event’s cut off time between 1 January 2022 and race day. Entry fees are £118 (£120 for unaffiliated runners).

The course is marked with National Trail acorn posts plus red and white tape and Centurion arrows. Support on route includes seven aid stations carrying a wide range of food and drinks, hot drinks at selected stations and hot food at the finish, plus dedicated medical cover with static teams, rapid response vehicles and race ambulances. Crew and pacers are not permitted on course except on the final lap at the track. Mandatory kit is required and missing items incur a one hour time penalty.
