Event overview

The South Downs Way 50® is a 50 mile (approximately 81 km) foot race along the South Downs Way National Trail on 11 April 2026. The route runs from Worthing to Eastbourne and begins with about six miles of chalk footpaths and bridleways climbing to join the South Downs Way at Chanctonbury Ring. The remainder of the course follows the South Downs Way and finishes with a lap of the athletics track at Eastbourne. The course total climb is listed as 5,700 ft (1,750 m). The race is run under a UK Athletics permit and has a 13 hour overall cut-off.

Logistics and rules

Entries open on 26 April 2025 at 10:00 with 650 open-registration places available; there are 50 additional guaranteed places for qualifying volunteers and 50 Grand Slam tickets for entry to a series of four 50 mile events. Entry fee is shown as £117 (UKA discounted fee noted as £115 in some materials). Minimum age is 20 and applicants must have completed at least a marathon within the event cut-off of that race between 1 January 2021 and race day to qualify.

The course is marked and supported by aid stations and medical teams. Materials state seven aid stations, hot drinks at selected checkpoints, and full medical support. Crew and pacers are not permitted on course. A list of mandatory items must be carried at all times; a one hour time penalty may be applied for missing kit.
