About the race
The Cederberg Backyard Ultra is an overnight mountain-loop race held at Jamaka Organic Farm in the Cederberg near Clanwilliam, Western Cape, South Africa. Runners complete repeated 7.8 km loops with about 430 m of elevation each, running one loop every 90 minutes for a sequence of 15 loops (22.5 hours). If more than one runner has completed all loops, a final footrace on the 16th loop decides the winner.
Only runners who have completed all required loops are eligible to win. The event village offers a shared start/finish area for refuelling, hydration and resting between loops, a shared camping spot included for runners, camping facilities for supporters (supporters must purchase separate camping tickets), aid station and race support, marked and prepared mountain trail, sweepers and marshals, and medical support. Entries include a finisher medal, a finish-line drink, and an awards celebration on Sunday. A portion of each ticket is donated to Sustainable Ceder, an organisation that plants cedar saplings to restore the Cederberg. All participants must be 18 years or older on race day.
Quiet hours apply in the evening and no music is permitted. A portion of ticket sales is allocated to the sustainability partner; tickets are nonrefundable and nontransferable according to the event disclaimer. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
