About the race
The Cederberg Backyard Ultra is an unconventional loop-based endurance event held at Jamaka Organic Farm & Resort in the Cederberg near Clanwilliam, Western Cape, South Africa. The format requires runners to complete a 7.8 km loop with about 430 m of elevation repeatedly: each loop must be finished within 90 minutes, for a sequence of 15 loops (a total of 22.5 hours). If more than one runner is eligible at the 16th loop, a final footrace among those who have completed all required loops determines the winner.
The event village includes a shared start/finish area used for refuelling, hydrating, resting and preparing between loops, plus a shared camping spot included with runner entries. Camping facilities are available for supporters, but supporters must obtain separate camping tickets. Race services listed for entrants include an aid station and race support, medical support, a finisher medal, a finish-line drink, and an awards celebration. A portion of every ticket sale is donated to Sustainable Ceder, an organization focused on restoring and planting cedar saplings in the Cederberg. All participants must be at least 18 years old on race day. Quiet hours apply in the evening and music is not permitted; ticket sales that include a sustainability donation are nonrefundable and nondeferrable.
