About the race
The Basalt Breaks Giants Causeway Coast Marathon Events are a series of off road trail races on the North Coast of Northern Ireland. Launched in 2010, the event attracts participants from Ireland, the UK, Europe and the US and uses routes that pass the Giant's Causeway and nearby headlands.
The terrain includes rugged coastal paths, cliffs, beaches, forest trails and the technical Portbraddon rock scramble to and from White Park Bay Beach. Courses reference locations such as Larrybane Quarry, Portballintrae and Portstewart Strand. Some races use bus transport to reach start points. The marathon is organised as an out and back route and the ultra follows extended sections of the same coastline.
Distances and categories include:
- 10 km race supporting Cancer Focus NI
- 10 km Challenge Walk supporting Cancer Focus NI
- Half marathon 21 km trail race
- Full marathon 42 km out and back route
- Ultra marathon 64 km coastal trail
- Corporate half marathon teams of three, leaderboard and prizes
The ultra and marathon are ITRA points events, with 2 points for the ultra and 1 point for the marathon. Proceeds from the 10 km events support Cancer Focus NI. Sponsors and partners named for the event include NeutriLean, Glens of Antrim Crisps, Mourne Mountains Brewery, Basalt Six, Basalt Breaks accommodation and INOV8 Trail Running.
