Catherine's Fat Ass

Catherine's Fat Ass is a trail 50k held on the southern Massanutten range. The course measures 29.75 miles with about 5,700 feet of total ascent and descent. The start location is the Route 211 east trailhead, and the event date is July 17, 2027. Entry opens June 17, 2027 and the field is limited to 75 runners.

The route passes through a mix of rocky climbs, wooded singletrack, mossy creek beds, gravel and dirt roads, and several overlooks of the Shenandoah Valley. The course layout includes six aid stations at the following locations: Bird Knob, Catherine's Furnace, Morgan Run, and Pitt Spring. Aid stations 1 and 6 share the Bird Knob location; aid stations 2 and 5 share the Catherine's Furnace location. Aid stations 3 and 4 provide water only. Runners are assigned items to contribute to the common supplies at the larger aid stations.

The trail description notes long climbs and technical rocky sections, a steep multi-switchback ascent on the Purple Trail, runnable fire roads, and some sections that can be muddy or slippery. Runners must remain on the marked course; if a runner leaves the course they are required to drop out at an aid station and inform the aid station captain.

The event does not provide medical personnel or medical supplies on course. Runners are responsible for their own health and safety, and remote locations may delay emergency response. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
