Casterbridge Canter
The Casterbridge Canter is a midweek summer evening trail run organised by Dorchester Middle School PTFA (charity number pending). The event uses a private family estate at Higher Came Farm, Dorchester DT2 8NR, with special permission to cross land not usually open to the public. The routes provide views across the estate and south Dorset downland toward Hardy's Monument, Maiden Castle, Dorchester and Poundbury.
Distances:
- 10 km - entrants must be 16 or over on race day
- 5 km - entrants must be 13 or over on race day
Both routes are fully signed and marshalled, run under Association of Running Clubs permit and rules, and are chip timed. The 10 km includes an aid station approximately halfway; full medical support is provided. The course is multi-terrain - grass margins, pastureland, stubble fields and stony farm tracks - and surfaces may be uneven or slippery when wet. Trail shoes are recommended. Both routes are unsuitable for buggies. Only open-ear or bone-conductor headphones are permitted. The event is cupless so participants should bring a collapsible cup or bottle for refills.
On-site amenities include field parking, toilets and refreshments including a licensed bar, BBQ and cakes. Numbers are limited, there are no on-the-day entries, and the entry deadline is Wednesday 1st July or sooner if full. Refunds are not offered but runner-to-runner transfers are available. The event raises funds for Dorchester Middle School PTFA. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
