14th Annual Captain James R. Minicozzi Memorial Race
The Captain James R. Minicozzi Memorial Race takes place in downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania. Held annually on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend during the local La Festa Italiana, this event offers two distinct participation options:
- 5K Run (3.1 miles)
- 1 Mile Fun Walk
The course features a lead vehicle to pace the runners and includes a water station located halfway through the route near North Washington Avenue. Participants can access water and fresh fruit at the main registration area. The first 100 registered individuals are guaranteed a commemorative race t-shirt.
Awards are presented to the top overall male and female runners, as well as the top three finishers in several age categories ranging from 13 and under to 71 and older. A specific recognition, the Armed Service Award, is granted to the top finisher in the 5K who is an active or veteran member of the armed forces. Walkers are also recognized with trophies for the top overall male and female finishers.
Proceeds from the registration fees support year-round community initiatives, including a Christmas party for children at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania and college scholarships for students at West Scranton High School. The awards ceremony takes place at the main bandstand immediately following the conclusion of the events. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
