Captain Gerald F. DeConto, USN Memorial 5k Run & Walk
The event is an annual 5k run and walk that supports the Captain Gerald F. DeConto Memorial Scholarship Fund. The 2026 edition takes place on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at Stop & Shop Plaza, 65 Rt 6A in Sandwich, MA. The course is a scenic 3.1 mile route that loops around the Sandwich Marina and beach area and finishes back at the plaza.
Runners and walkers are both included in the event format. Runners start ahead of walkers and official timing is provided by Spitler Race Systems of Pawtucket, RI. A virtual participation option is offered for those who cannot attend in person.
The race has awarded scholarships in Captain DeConto’s memory since 2002. The event also serves as a memorial: Captain DeConto, a Sandwich native, was killed during the September 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon while on duty in the Navy. The 2026 race marks the 25th anniversary of those attacks and will include remembrance for Captain DeConto as well as acknowledgment of his mother, who passed away in 2025 and who had been involved with the event for many years.
