Cappy’s Backyard Ultra : Overview

Cappy’s Backyard Ultra is a timed endurance running event held at Cathedral Gorge State Park, Panaca, Lincoln County, Nevada. The event uses repeated loops; each loop is 4.1667 miles long. Runners complete the loop every hour until only one runner completes a final lap more than anyone else.

Format and rules

Runners have one hour to complete each loop and must be in the starting corral at the top of the hour to begin the next loop. A small crew of up to two people may set up at the start area. Warnings are given before each loop and late starts are not allowed. While on the course, runners may not receive aid from their crew or other individuals, may not use artificial aids including trekking poles, and may not leave the course except for restroom use. Pacers are not permitted. Course will be well marked.

Course and facilities

There are separate day and night courses. The day loop is about 25% road and 75% single-track trail with approximately 292 ft total climbing. The night course is an out-and-back that is about 75% road and 25% dirt/trail with approximately 117 ft total elevation gain. The group use area includes restrooms, showers, water, pavilions, and space for dry tent camping. Some road sections may have park traffic and signage for drivers.

Entry, awards and logistics

Registration fee is $90; registration runs from April 2025 until March 25, 2026. Registration includes one night of dry camping and day-use parking for one vehicle. There are no refunds. The start/finish pavilion will host an aid station with drinks, Tailwind nutrition, fruit and some food items; no aid stations are provided along the course. Awards include an award for the last runner standing and the runner who makes the assist, DNF medals, and event t-shirts listing all competitors.
