Cappy’s Backyard Ultra
Cappy’s Backyard Ultra takes place March 28, 2026 at Cathedral Gorge State Park, Panaca, Nevada, in the park group use area. The event follows the backyard ultra format: participants run a loop of 4.1667 miles each hour and must return to the start corral before the hour expires to continue. Runners may have a small crew of up to two people who may set up at the pit area. Once on course a runner may not receive aid until they return to the start area.
There are separate day and night courses. The day course is a loop with roughly 25 percent road and 75 percent singletrack or hiking trail, about 292 ft of total climbing, and a gradual uphill section near miles 1.5 to 2.5. The night course is an out and back with about 75 percent road and 25 percent dirt road or trail and about 117 ft of total elevation gain. Both courses are inside the state park, are marked, and may have a small amount of vehicle traffic.
An aid station at the start finish pavilion offers water, soda, Tailwind nutrition, fruit, and some hot and fast snack options. No aid is provided on the course. Registration is stated at $90 and includes one night of dry camping and park day use for one vehicle. Packet pickup is available the evening before and the morning of the event. Awards include recognition for the last runner standing and the assisting runner, DNF medals, and participant shirts. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
