Event details

The Capitol Peak Mega Fat Ass is a trail running event held Saturday, January 17, 2026, in Capitol State Forest near Olympia, WA. The start and finish are at the Margaret McKenny Campground, 10900 Waddell Creek Rd SW. The event offers two distance options:

  • 17 miles
  • 34 miles

This is a low-support "Fat Ass" format. Aid stations provide water only; participants must be self-supported. There are no awards or T-shirts. Post-race soup will be provided. The event serves as a fundraiser for Friends of Capitol Forest and also donates to South Sound Mobile Search and Rescue. Registration closes on January 15 at 11:59 PM PT.

Course and logistics

The course follows trails in Capitol State Forest and includes the McKenny Trail, Fall Creek Day Use Area, Greenline Trail, Capitol Peak, and returns to McKenny Trail to finish. A Discover Pass is required to park at the Margaret McKenny Campground; an annual pass is $30 or a day pass is $10. A Washington DNR enforcement officer will check for Discover Passes and may issue a ticket if a pass is not displayed.
