Cape Paterson Aquathon
The Cape Paterson Aquathon is a beach-based swim-run event held on Sunday 17 January 2027 at Cape Paterson. The course starts with a 400 m surf swim from First Surf beach. Swimmers exit the water, use the stairs to the transition area, then complete a 4.4 km road run around the township of Cape Paterson.
Minimum competitor age is 14 years on the day of the event. Entry options and fees include Early Bird and Standard rates: Individuals 18 plus (Early Bird $70, Standard $75), Juniors under 18 (Early Bird $45, Standard $50), and Relay Teams (Early Bird $90, Standard $100). Entrant categories cover juniors, seniors, masters and veterans, plus male, female and team divisions. A Local Resident category requires proof of Bass Coast Shire residency on race day.
Race kit is distributed at the Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Clubhouse on event day and includes a timing transponder (bracelet), a coloured swim cap and a race pack with a Cape Aquathon t-shirt. Proceeds support volunteer lifesaving for Cape Paterson.
Key rules include a 15-minute time limit for the swim, mandatory wearing of the issued transponder, permitted use of wetsuits but prohibition of propulsion aids such as fins, and a requirement that runners not use headphones. Water safety personnel may assist swimmers; return to shore by rescue craft results in retirement. Officials and medical staff have authority to remove or disqualify competitors. Non-returned transponders incur a $100 replacement charge.
Prizes include $250 for the first overall male and female, and category prizes with first-place payouts typically $100 and second place $75. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
