Event Overview
The San Remo Channel Challenge is an aquathon event consisting of a 550m channel swim and a 2km run. It is the third event (Race 3) of the Bass Coast Series and is hosted by the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club. The event serves as a major fundraiser for the club, with proceeds supporting volunteer patrols and lifesaving services at Woolamai Beach, Smiths Beach, and the wider Phillip Island community.
The Course
The swim leg starts from San Remo on the mainland and crosses the Western Port channel to Newhaven on Phillip Island. Due to strong tidal flow, the swim takes place during the approximately 15-20 minute window of slack water at high tide. Upon exiting the water at Newhaven, competitors transition to the run leg. The 2km run route goes back over the Phillip Island Bridge to the finish line in San Remo's main street.
Event Day and Series
The event is part of a day-long festival in the town of San Remo, which includes market stalls, various food vendors, and live music. It is one of three events that make up the Bass Coast Summer Series, where participants can earn points for their finish position. Series points can contribute to overall category prizes.
Prizes and Participation
Prizes are awarded in junior, senior, open, and local categories for both males and females. The total prize pool includes $3,000 in cash and $3,000 worth of products and services. All participants receive a Channel Challenge T-shirt. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
