Event details
The San Remo Channel Challenge takes place on Saturday 21 February 2026. It is an aquathon that combines an open-water swim across the Westernport channel with a road run back to San Remo. Distances:
- 550 m swim across the channel from San Remo foreshore to Newhaven
- 2 km run from Newhaven, over the Phillip Island Bridge, returning to San Remo
The swim must be completed during slack water of the appropriate high tide, a period of about 15 to 20 minutes. Competitors enter the water in waves identified by cap colour and move to a grassy transition area at Newhaven to change for the run. Transition bags are transported to and from Newhaven for participants.
Entry, categories and rules
The minimum competitor age is 15 years on the day of the event. Registration is online only; no walk-ins are permitted. Race kit pickup is at the San Remo Hotel Motel on race day. Participants receive a timing transponder and coloured swim cap; the transponder must be worn for both swim and run. Wetsuits are permitted; artificial propulsion devices are not. If a swimmer requires IRB or rescue jet ski assistance they will be returned to shore and retire from the race. Swimmers may accept flotation assistance without retiring. Results are posted about 90 minutes after the finish. The event is Leg 3 of the Bass Coast Series. Total prizes listed include $3,000 cash plus $3,000 in products and services. All proceeds support volunteer lifesaving for Woolamai Beach SLSC. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
