Event overview

The San Remo Channel Challenge is an aquathon held between San Remo (mainland) and Newhaven on Phillip Island as part of the Bass Coast Series (Leg 3). The event is a day-long festival with market stands, food vendors and live music. It operates as a fundraiser for Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club, with proceeds supporting volunteer patrols at Woolamai Beach and Smiths Beach and lifesaving services for the Phillip Island region.

Distances

  • 550 m channel swim from the San Remo foreshore (south of the pier) to Newhaven.
  • 2 km run from Newhaven across the Phillip Island Bridge back into San Remo, finishing on the main street.

Format and rules

The swim must be completed during the slack water window of the appropriate high tide, which lasts about 15-20 minutes. Competitors change at a transition area on the Newhaven foreshore and run after donning shoes. Participants receive a timing transponder and a coloured swim cap at registration; the transponder must be worn throughout the event and the swim cap is required at the swim start. Wetsuits are permitted. Swimmers may accept flotation assistance without retiring, but rescue craft assistance results in retirement. Non-returned or lost transponders incur a replacement charge.

Registration, categories and prizes

Registration is online only; walk-ins are not accepted. Minimum competitor age is 15 years on race day. Entrant categories include junior, senior, age groups, relay and local competitor classifications; local residents must have a permanent address in Bass Coast Shire. Participants receive a race pack including a T-shirt. Prize pools mentioned total $3,000 in cash plus $3,000 in products and services. Results are published about 90 minutes after the race at the event timing provider. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
