Event overview

The San Remo Channel Challenge is an aquathon held in San Remo, Victoria, as part of the Bass Coast Series. The event comprises a 550 m channel swim from San Remo on the mainland to Newhaven on Phillip Island, followed by a 2 km run back across the Phillip Island Bridge to finish in San Remo. The swim crosses the Westernport channel and takes place on slack water at high tide; slack water lasts approximately 15-20 minutes and competitors are expected to complete the swim within that period. The event raises funds for Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club to support local volunteer lifesaving services.

Race format, categories and rules

  • Distances: 550 m swim, 2 km run.
Entrant categories include junior (15-17), senior (18+), age-group masters (40+, 50+), relay teams (male, female, mixed) and local-resident categories. Minimum competitor age is 15 years on race day. Swimmers must wear the issued swim cap and timing transponder at all times. Wetsuits are permitted; artificial propulsion devices are prohibited. Assistance from safety personnel is permitted for flotation but use of IRBs or rescue craft results in automatic retirement. Transition bags with running shoes are transported between Newhaven and San Remo.

Registration, logistics and prizes

Registration is online only and race kits are collected at the San Remo Hotel Motel on event day. Entry fees vary by category and early-bird period. Results are published after the event. Prize allocations include cash and product prizes, with a total prize pool noted in the event information. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
