About the race
Candles and Calacas Día de los Muertos 5K is a themed community run and walk taking place on November 1, 2026, at the Michigan State University Hubbard/Akers Courtyard, 964 Hubbard Rd, East Lansing, MI. The event is organized by the International Engagement Volunteers and the International Engagement in Mexico education abroad program. Proceeds support service learning projects carried out by Michigan State University students through IEV. The event offers an in person 5K and a virtual 5K.
All in person participants receive a customized T-shirt and runners receive two food tickets. Medals are awarded to the first 100 participants to complete the race. Virtual participants receive a customized T-shirt and a finisher medal shipped to the address provided; the virtual registration fee includes $8.00 for shipping and handling. Registration opens September 10, 2026.
In person registration closes October 31, 2026; virtual registration remains open through November 1, 2026. Register by October 16, 2026, to guarantee a T-shirt. On site registration is available at the same prices and T-shirts will be distributed on a first come first served basis while supplies last. Pricing examples include Students $25.00 and General Public $45.00 for the in person 5K, and Virtual 5K $53.00.
