Cairngorms Ultra Trail
The Cairngorms Ultra Trail is a mountain ultra event based at Mar Lodge Estate, three miles west of Braemar in the Cairngorms National Park. The main course covers 60 km with 1006 m of ascent and a comparable descent, reaching a highest point of about 700 m. The route is predominantly off road and follows well defined paths, old drove roads and mountain passes, with only small sections on minor roads at the start and finish.
The route is waymarked so navigation experience is not required, and a GPX file is available as a backup. There are limited aid stations for environmental reasons, with staffed aid at Derry Lodge (about 23 km) and Linn of Dee (about 45 km). Checkpoints and intermediate cut offs apply and the full event has a 12 hour 30 minute time limit.
A short course option reduces the distance to about 48 km (30 miles) by leaving the route at CP5 Linn of Dee and following a direct route to Mar Lodge; those choosing this option are still classed as finishers but may not be eligible for prizes and must reach CP5 within the specified time.
Entries are limited, minimum age is 18 years, and a 50 percent refund (minus the online booking fee) is available up to six weeks before the event. Camping is available at the venue for a fee with basic facilities. Event briefing notes and kit lists are published prior to the event.
