Cairngorms Ultra Trail at Mar Lodge, Braemar
The Cairngorms Ultra Trail is a 60 km mountain trail event based at Mar Lodge Estate, three miles west of Braemar in the Cairngorms National Park. The course covers 1006 m of ascent and reaches a highest point of about 700 m. Apart from a few short sections on minor roads at the start and finish, the route is fully off road and mostly follows well defined paths, tracks and old drove roads between high plateaux and corries.
The route is waymarked so navigation experience is not required, and a GPX file is provided as a backup. Limited aid stations provide food and drink; natural river water can be used to refill supplies. Intermediate checkpoints include Derry Lodge, Hutchison Refuge, Corrour Refuge, Linn of Dee and Glen Quoich. The main aid stations are at Derry Lodge (approx 23 km) and Linn of Dee (approx 45 km). Time limits apply for the full course, with an overall limit of 12.5 hours and intermediate cutoffs at key points.
Event facilities at the venue include parking and basic camping on Friday and Saturday nights for a fee. Entries are limited for conservation reasons. Minimum age is 18 years. A 50% refund (minus the online booking fee) is available up to six weeks before the event. The race is listed as a UTMB qualifying event.
