Buster Britton Memorial Triathlon : Oak Mountain State Park, Pelham AL
The Buster Britton Memorial Triathlon is a multisport event held at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama. The event marks a long running tradition and includes Sprint and Olympic distance options with open water swimming, road cycling and a paved run course.
Distances
- Swim: Sprint 400 yd, Olympic 1,200 yd
- Bike: Sprint 13.1 mi, Olympic 26.2 mi
- Run: Sprint 3 mi, Olympic 5.65 mi
The swim takes place in calm Double Oak Lake and is conducted as a time trial with racers entering the water at short intervals. Race numbers are assigned by estimated swim time for seeding; late registrants are seeded toward the back. Wetsuit use follows USA Triathlon rules and depends on water temperature ranges.
The bike course uses paved park roads with a bike lane where available. It is moderately hilly, out and back on the main park drive, and the Olympic distance completes two loops of the sprint course. A designated bike mount and dismount line is used; athletes must walk bikes through transition at that line.
The run is an out and back on paved roads that pass picnic areas and a shaded wooded section with short rolling hills. Olympic racers run two loops of the sprint course. Participants may enter as individual triathletes, swim-bike, bike-run, relay teams, or aquabike entries.
Event operations follow USA Triathlon sanctioning. Race staging is at the South Trailhead parking lot on Terrace Drive. A park entrance fee is included in registration. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
