About the race
Burros in the Pines is a pack burro race at Fort Tuthill County Park in Flagstaff, Arizona, held on June 26, 2027. Teams consist of one person and one burro, and the event is limited to 100 teams. Burro rental is a separate fee and must be arranged before registering.
Distances offered:
- 3 miles : The Tenderfoot Trot, fun run on a wide, gentle forest loop.
- 6 miles : The Prospector's Pursuit, single-track climbs and meadow crossings; aid station present.
- 9 miles : The Mother Lode, long course that requires a pack saddle with pick, gold pan and shovel to qualify for prizes.
Only donkeys/burros may compete; no other equines are permitted. Riding is not allowed; this is an in-hand trail race. Teams must stay together on course; the burro's nose crossing the finish line determines the winning team. Race officials may disqualify teams for mistreatment of burros, losing required pack equipment, use of prohibited tools, leaving the designated course without correction, or interfering with other teams.
Aid/check-in stations are provided: one for the 6-mile course and two for the 9-mile course, and racers on those courses must check in at each station. Out-of-state burros must have a negative Coggins and health certificate; a veterinary check is recommended. Burro camp is available with fees per night and stalls, potable water, toilets, hand wash stations and manure pickup. Proceeds support Forever Home Donkey Rescue & Sanctuary. Race entry fee is $75 per team; swag bags, finisher medals and shirts are provided. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
