Bunyan Battle 5K Run/Walk
The Bunyan Battle 5K Run/Walk is an annual sporting event held at the Island Lake State Recreation Area in Brighton, Michigan. The event takes place on the same day as the traditional football game between Michigan and Michigan State, inviting fans to represent their respective teams. The race is set on the Island Lake Trail, featuring a completely paved out-and-back course that showcases autumn scenery within the park.
Participants can choose from several event categories based on their team preference:
- Wolverine 5K Run/Walk
- Spartan 5K Run/Walk
- Virtual 5K Run/Walk (Wolverines)
- Virtual 5K Run/Walk (Spartans)
The event features a competitive element called the Battle for Bunyan Challenge. This challenge aggregates the times of the top four fastest male and female finishers from each team to determine the winner of the Paul Bunyan Trophy.
All in-person participants receive chip timing with live results, a custom dri-fit race shirt, a commemorative bib, and a finisher medal. The event also provides post-race refreshments and free race photography. Please note that a Michigan State Park pass is required for vehicle entry into the recreation area. The race supports the Trecho Fitness Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on fitness programming for underserved youth and individuals.
