About the Event
The Buckeye Ultra 200 Mile Road Race is an approximately 203 mile road run in Ohio. The route goes from Walnut Beach on Lake Erie to Wellsville, near the Ohio-West Virginia border, and is an out-and-back course that starts and finishes on the beach. The scenery includes lakefront streets, post-industrial cities, Amish country, and mountain foothills. The total climb is just under 6,000 feet, featuring long flat segments and about 70 miles of rolling hills.
Race Format and Logistics
The event has a 6 day time limit, requiring an average pace of about 34 miles per day. It is an open road challenge with no official aid stations; runners are dependent on themselves or a crew for supplies. Crews are encouraged due to limited resources overnight but are not required. Stores, diners, and shops are typically open between 6 a.m. and 9-10 p.m. There are several hotels on or near the course in towns like Austinburg, Warren, Salem, and Lisbon. Runners who cannot finish must self-extract.
A 100 mile option is also available. It begins the day after the 200-mile race, starting at Wellsville Nicholson Stadium and finishing at Walnut Beach. Participants in the 100-mile run are required to provide their own transportation to the start line, and the cutoff time is 72 hours.
Awards and Recognition
Finishers of the 200-mile race receive a large Buckeye 200 buckle and a unique finisher's award. Runners who complete 500 official miles on the Buckeye course over multiple years earn a special '500 Lifetime Miles' award. The current course records are 53:56:59 for men (set by Alex Ramsey) and 58:08:36 for women (set by Aneta Zeppetella). Any runner who breaks their respective course record earns $100 and free entry to all future Buckeye events.
A portion of each entry fee is donated to the Wellsville High School athletic department. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
