Event overview
Brandon Vertical is an IMRA event in County Kerry on Friday 17 July 2026. The route distance is 3.90 km with a total climb of 750 m. The event carries a difficulty rating of 9 (3,3,3), indicating difficult terrain and more than 500 m ascent. The route is not marked and GPS use is allowed. The race is part of the Irish Uphill League.
Route and location
The vertical route follows the Cosán na Naomh pilgrim path from the Baile Breac carpark for about 3 km, then deviates from the path to add vertical gain and includes a short section of scrambling after the eighth station of the cross. Marshalls will be stationed at key locations to help prevent competitors taking the Brandon Ridge route instead of the vertical route. Start and registration are at Baile Breac carpark and the finish is at the summit cross.
Logistics, kit and entries
This event requires Level C (Advanced) mandatory kit. Required items include a waterproof jacket with integrated hood and taped seams, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone with emergency number stored, foil blanket or bivvy bag, waterproof full leg cover, means to carry a minimum of 500 mL water, emergency food, map of the route/area, and a compass. The final kit to be carried may be confirmed on the day and will be advised at registration. Random kit checks may be made and failure to have required items may result in denied entry or disqualification. No entry details are posted yet; entries for league events usually open a couple of weeks before the event.
