Blacks Grove Backyard Ultra
The Blacks Grove Backyard Ultra is a last runner standing endurance event held at Blacks Grove Park in Wadena, Minnesota. The course features technical singletrack trails through Minnesota woods, including obstacles such as roots, rocks, and rolling hills. The event offers two participation options:
- Backyard Ultra Division: A last runner standing format where participants must complete a 4.167-mile loop every hour.
- One-Loop Fun Run: A single loop of 4.167 miles for those who wish to experience the course without the multi-hour format.
The backyard ultra follows strict regulations. Runners must finish each loop within the hour to continue; failure to start or finish on time results in a DNF (Did Not Finish). The event includes unique "Relentless Blacks Grove Grind" rules, such as reversing the course direction every five loops. Between 10 PM and 5 AM, a silence rule is enforced, prohibiting music and artificial noise makers. Additionally, at check-in, runners must select only one comfort item from specific categories, such as a choice between a chair or a blanket, to use for the duration of the event.
The park is a primitive location with no electrical outlets. Designated camping areas are available for participants, but runners must provide their own tents and portable power banks. Support crews are permitted to assist runners only within the designated start and finish corral. On-course assistance, pacing, and trekking poles are prohibited. Mandatory gear for all participants includes a phone, hydration, and a headlamp for use after dark. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
