Blackout Night Runs, Fort Tuthill County Park, Flagstaff, AZ
Blackout Night Runs is a set of night trail races held in the ponderosa pines at Fort Tuthill County Park, with courses that reach about 7,000 feet in elevation. The event offers multiple distances on trails that vary from narrow single track to wider maintained forest paths and include mesa viewpoints under dark night skies.
Distances
- 27K - 16.8 miles, two full loops, 1,293 ft total elevation gain
- 13K - 8.56 miles, 648 ft total elevation gain
- 6K - 4.12 miles, 287 ft total elevation gain
The courses use Soldiers Trail and Highlands Trail and are described as well graded with a mix of single track and wider forest paths. The 27K is a multi-loop course while the shorter races follow portions of the same trail network. Courses will be marked with orange plastic ribbons and colored signs at junctions; non-race routes will be marked with checkerboard flagging.
Aid stations are supplied along the routes and include water, an electrolyte drink product, sweet and salty snacks, and fruit. Runners are advised to carry at least one bottle of water due to elevation and daytime heat. Drop bags and crew access are allowed at the start and finish area only. Pacers are not permitted for any distance.
Event services at the start and finish include chip timing with race results, finish line photography, a branded goodie, an iced coffee bar, and a custom finisher medal. Medical staff are stationed at the start and finish and may remove participants from the race for safety reasons. Parking is located at the North Parking Lot near the Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course. A tent only group campground is available nearby with limited permits and basic facilities.
