Course and race information
The course runs on Black Mountain (Amat Kwanyil), an ancient extinct volcano and open space that is Kumeyaay land. Terrain includes chaparral and coastal sage scrub, manzanita-lined single-track, laurel sumac, and a mix of technical single-track and jeep trail. Trails can be rocky, steep, and technical.
Approximate elevation gain is listed as about 5,500 feet for the 50K, 2,500 feet for the 25K, and 2,000 feet for the half marathon. Wildlife in the area can include deer, bobcats, red diamond rattlesnakes, and occasional mountain lion. The 50K course was slightly modified in 2025 to address a private property issue.
Aid stations are staffed by ham radio experts who relay runner and aid station information to race headquarters. The event lists local sponsors and supporting organizations. Location is given as 9711 Oviedo Way, San Diego, CA. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
