Black Mountain Trail Races
Black Mountain Trail Races take place on the trails of Amat Kwanyil (Black Mountain) in San Diego. The event offers three distances and routes that mix technical single-track and wider jeep trails through chaparral and coastal sage scrub. The open space includes manzanita-lined single-track and varied terrain that can be rocky and steep.
The natural area is an ancient extinct volcano and Kumeyaay land. The landscape also includes an abandoned arsenic mine and wildlife such as deer, bobcats, red diamond rattlesnakes, and the occasional mountain lion. Course surfaces and vegetation create varied footing and exposure.
Distances and approximate elevation gain:
- 50K - about 5,500 feet elevation gain
- 25K - about 2,500 feet elevation gain
- 1/2 Marathon - about 2,000 feet elevation gain
A 2025 update notes a slight modification to the 50K course made to address a private property issue. The event location is listed as 9711 Oviedo Way, San Diego, CA. The event is sponsored by San Diego Ultra Running Friends (SURF). Registration closes on Mon, Jun 15 at 11:59 PM PT. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
