Black Mountain Trail Races - June 20, 2026
Black Mountain Trail Races is a trail running event held in San Diego, California, at the Black Mountain open space (Amat Kwanyil). The event offers three distances and takes place on trails that cross an extinct volcano and former mining areas within land long associated with the Kumeyaay People.
The race distances are:
- 50K
- 25K
- Half marathon
The courses run through chaparral and coastal sage scrub with manzanita-lined single-track and jeep trail. Terrain is described as rocky, steep, and technical. Notable natural and historical features include an abandoned arsenic mine and varied vegetation such as laurel sumac. Wildlife observations noted in the area include deer, bobcats, red diamond rattlesnakes, and occasional mountain lion.
Elevation gain is approximately 5,500 feet for the 50K, 2,500 feet for the 25K, and 2,000 feet for the half marathon. The 50K course was modified in 2025 to address a private property issue. Aid stations are supported by the San Diego Ham Radio Community, with radio operators relaying runner and station information. The event follows Trail Sisters guidelines and is part of the SoCal UltraRunner’s Grand Prix. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
