Bizz Johnson's Southside Scramble : Susan River Canyon trail races
Bizz Johnson's Southside Scramble is a trail running event that starts and finishes at the Hobo Camp Day Use Area in Susanville, California. The event offers three loop distances:
- 22K Dirty Devil's
- 14K Tunnel's Blast
- 7K Hobo's Special
Races use the Bizz Johnson Trail for one leg and the Southside Trail singletrack for the return. In odd-numbered years the course is run in reverse. Course features mentioned include rockslides, vista points, railroad tunnel access near the 14K route, a seasonal foot bridge at Devil's Corral on the 22K, and flowy single-track sections on the Southside Trail.
Aid stations serve fruit, salty snacks, Heed electrolyte drink, and water. Locations listed are Mile 3.8 on the Bizz Johnson Trail, Devil's Corral at the Southside turnoff (about Mile 5.94 for the 22K), and a Southside Trail station roughly 2 miles from the finish. This is a cupless event; runners are expected to use their own hydration systems. Hydrapak is named as the cupless partner and a collapsible cup is supplied at packet pickup.
Packet pickup is available at the Susanville Historic Train Depot and at the Hobo Camp Day Use Area on race morning. Parking at Hobo Camp is limited; additional parking is available at nearby trailheads and the Susanville Historic Train Depot. The event is capped at 150 total entrants. Finishers receive a custom medal and a custom towel; overall and age-group awards are given. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
