Bizz Johnson's Southside Scramble
The Southside Scramble takes place on June 12, 2027, at the Hobo Camp Day Use Area in Susanville, California. It is a set of trail races that start and finish at Hobo Camp and use sections of the Bizz Johnson Trail and the South Side Trail alongside the Susan River.
Race distances:
- 22K Dirty Devil's 22K: out to Devil's Corral and return via the South Side Trail.
- 14K Tunnel's Blast 14K: approaches the first railroad tunnel then drops onto South Side Trail.
- 7K Hobo Special 7K: climbs part of the Bizz Johnson Trail then returns on South Side singletrack.
Courses begin on a fire road above Hobo Camp and merge onto the Bizz Johnson Trail for the outbound portion. The route includes a seasonal foot bridge, sections of singletrack with rockslides and vista points, and a connector at Twin Bridges for the shortest course. In odd-numbered years the course direction is reversed; the race director may also alter the course and mark changes with signs.
Post-race provisions listed by the organizer include cold beverages, snacks, BBQ hotdogs for finishers, and access to the Susan River for a swim. Families and friends may bring chairs or canopies and use the day-use BBQ grills.
Registration opens 2026-08-22 and closes 2027-04-01; fees vary by distance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
