Bishop High Sierra Ultras
The Bishop High Sierra Ultras are a set of high altitude trail races held at Millpond Recreation Area near Bishop, California. The courses run mostly on four wheel drive dirt roads, with some single-track trail and short paved sections. Much of the 100K and 50 mile routes are above 7000 feet, and the terrain is often exposed, rocky, and dry with few trees.
Weather can vary from cold or snowy to hot and windy, with afternoon breezes and higher temperatures later in the day. Aid stations are placed about every 3 to 7 miles and provide a variety of food and drinks beyond standard race fare. Each aid station carries medical kits and foot care supplies; pain relief medication is not offered. Runners are tracked by a local Ham Radio club.
Finishers receive a hand made ceramic medallion, and overall winners by gender including non-binary receive prizes. A post race meal is provided with hot snacks, cold drinks and additional food options. The event is operated by the Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association with necessary permits from land management agencies, and net proceeds are donated to the Eastern Sierra Youth Outdoor Program and Inyo County Search and Rescue.
