Course, safety and rules
The 3.2-mile swim follows the Beaufort River estuary from the Safe Harbor Port Royal Landing Marina to the day dock adjacent to the Beaufort Waterfront Park. The 1-mile swim begins at the Beaufort Memorial Hospital dock; both swims finish at the same downtown dock. Water temperature is typically mid 70s Fahrenheit and surface conditions can range from calm to choppy. The Beaufort Search and Rescue Squadron provides primary safety, supported by kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and lifeguards. Swimmers must check in before boarding event buses, follow safety personnel directions, and finish by coming up the boat ramp and crossing the timing mat. Minimum ages apply: 10 years for the 1-mile swim and 13 years for the 3.2-mile swim. Headphones and swim-enhancing equipment are not permitted. Wet suits are allowed but make a swimmer ineligible for awards. Awards and specialty bobblehead prizes are given to top finishers in listed events.
