Beast of Big Creek Skyrace at Mount Ellinor
Beast of Big Creek is a two-day mountain running event held on Mount Ellinor in the Olympic Mountains near Hoodsport, Washington in early August 2026. The program includes a Skyrace that climbs from near sea level to alpine terrain and a shorter Forest Loop on Big Creek trail through temperate rainforest. The Skyrace route uses steep singletrack and includes a vertical kilometer section to the true summit, with alpine exposure and summit views toward Mount Olympus, Mount Rainier, and Mount St. Helens. Start and finish are at Big Creek Campground; course routing was adjusted in 2026 to manage increased field sizes.
- Skyrace: 24 km / 15 miles, 1,600 m vertical gain.
- Forest Loop: 10 km / 6 miles, about 1,200 ft vertical gain.
The Skyrace has aid access at roughly mile 5.4 and 8.4 and no aid at the summit turnaround. Organizers request competitors carry at least 500 ml of water on the Skyrace; poles are allowed. Cutoffs are approximately six hours for the Skyrace and two hours for the Forest Loop; early starts are possible by arrangement for the Skyrace. Race registration includes a bib, aid station and finish refreshments, a participant gift and shirt, chip timing, medical support, and a tree planted per finisher. The event is part of the Skyrunner World Series and the USA Skyrunner National Series. The races are cupless to reduce waste; participants are asked to bring a collapsible cup for aid stations.
