Trail Running with Canine Companions
The Barkin' Mad Ultra is a trail running and walking festival held at the Rokeby Recreation Reserve in Victoria. This event focuses on the bond between humans and animals, supporting the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming efforts of Aus Hair of the Dog Rescue Inc. Participants navigate native forest trails and have the option to complete the distances with or without a dog.
Available distances include:
- 2 km trail walk (held on Sunday)
- 5 km run or walk
- 10 km run or walk
- 20 km run
- 50 km ultra run
- 50 km team relay
The event features an adaptive runner category for athletes with vision, hearing, neurological, physical, or intellectual impairments. Accessible facilities, including wheelchair-friendly toilets and trails, are available at the event village.
Specific rules apply to participating dogs to ensure their safety. Dogs must remain on a lead at all times, and brachycephalic breeds or dogs under one year of age are restricted from the 20 km and 50 km distances. Aid stations provide hydration and nutrition for both humans and dogs, including dog treats and crates for resting. Mandatory gear for participants includes items such as a mobile phone, snake bandage, and a collapsible cup, with additional requirements for longer distances.
