Badger Challenge
The Badger Challenge is a six hour off-road event held at Beacon Hill Country Park, Lower Car Park, LE12 8TA in Leicestershire. The course is a roughly 3.3 mile loop that starts at the lower car park and climbs along well maintained crushed stone paths toward the trig point before descending the other side back to the start. The trig point is not on the official route but can be visited as extra distance.
The route is distinctly uphill for the first half and downhill for the second. Underfoot is generally decent but can be mucky depending on weather. The course is described as demanding underfoot but not technical.
Participants may complete as many laps as they wish within the six hour time limit; lap counts determine overall distance (for example four laps equals a half marathon, eight laps equals approximately a marathon). Canicross is permitted with short leads and consideration for other runners; canicross starters may be grouped with the main field depending on numbers. The event is also suitable for rucking.
Parking at Beacon Hill is charged on site (approximately £3 for under three hours and about £4 for the day) and can be paid by card or coin. Entry fees are tiered and vary by entry time, with typical prices in the range of about £37 to £44; unaffiliated entrants pay an additional £2. The event has run at Beacon Hill since 2022 and received a Gold Racecheck award in 2024. A GPX of the route is available from Plotaroute. The organiser has a partnership with Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity and offers optional donation or fundraising during entry.
