Event overview

Babbitts Backyard Ultra is a Last Person Standing running event held near SP Crater in Flagstaff, AZ, at the 447-448 mile post on Tub Ranch Road. The format requires each competitor to complete a 4.167-mile loop every hour. Every surviving runner who completes a loop is tied for the lead; the event continues until only one runner completes a loop that no one else can match. Results are reported as distance covered, and the final winner is the last person to complete a loop.

Course, timing and rules

The course mixes dirt trails and road and has approximately 150 ft of elevation gain with views of the crater and the Peaks. Each loop must be completed within an hour to count, including the final lap. Warning whistles are given three, two, and one minutes prior to each start; all competitors must start at the bell and no late starts are allowed. Competitors may not leave the course during a loop except for restrooms. No non-competitors are allowed on course, and no artificial aids, including trekking poles, are permitted. Slower runners must allow passes. One crew member at a time per runner is allowed. Water is available throughout the race and each runner is assigned a 10' by 10' space near the start/finish. The event is organized as a not-for-profit; any net proceeds will be used to support local businesses or non-profit organizations. Health measures include wide trails, hand sanitizer, and social distancing. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
