Avalon Benefit Run on Catalina Island

The Avalon Benefit 50 Mile/50K Run takes place on Catalina Island, California. This event is organized by the Avalon Lions Club to raise funds for island charities and local schools. The 50 Mile Run is recognized as the oldest ultra trail run in California.

Participants can choose between two primary distances:

  • 50 Miles (approx. 80.5 km)
  • 50K (approx. 31 miles)

The 50 Mile course traverses the entire length of the island. It starts in the city of Avalon, heads to the opposite end of the island at Two Harbors, and returns to the starting point. The 50K course follows the same trail system but turns back toward Avalon at the Little Harbor Overlook, passing through Middle Ranch on the return journey.

The terrain consists of island roads and trails that offer views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding natural landscape. The routes pass through areas where local wildlife, such as bison, are frequently observed. Aid stations supported by volunteers are positioned along the course to assist runners. Registration for the event typically opens nearly a year in advance in early February. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
