Ashtead 10k and 2k fun run - Ashtead Common
The event is an annual off-road running event organised by Ashtead Running Group to raise funds for local charities. Races run entirely on rough tracks around Ashtead Common, a Site of Special Scientific Interest for breeding birds and a National Nature Reserve noted for decaying ancient trees and rare invertebrates. The site also contains two scheduled ancient monuments, a Roman villa and a triangular earthwork. The race runs with permission from the Ashtead Common Rangers and the Corporation of the City of London.
The course is not flat and is best described as undulating. Organisers note a past incident involving hornets and state they cannot guarantee the course will be hornet-free. For safety reasons, earphones are not permitted during the race. The entry fee covers processing, a free raffle, licences and permits, and medical cover; surplus funds after race expenses are donated to charity. The event is promoted as Britain’s "greenest" race and encourages participants to use public transport, cycling, walking or car sharing; the train station is described as about one minute's walk from the race HQ/start.
