Alexandra Airport Carousel Backyard Ultra : April 10th 2027
The Carousel Backyard Ultra is an endurance running event held at Alexandra Airport, Central Otago, New Zealand (166 Coates Road, Alexandra). The race uses a fixed loop of 6.71 km with about 50 m of vertical gain per lap. The course combines hardpacked mountain-bike singletrack, 4WD tracks and a short section through pine forest, and passes around the airport with mountain views.
The event runs on a backyard ultra format: runners must complete one loop every hour; if a runner fails to start or finish a lap within the hour they are recorded as DNF. Only one finisher is possible each edition if one runner outlasts all others. After the hourly bell no support is allowed on course; competitors must carry or otherwise have what they need between laps and return to the corral for resupply.
This is a self-supported event at race base; participants provide their own shelter, chair, food and water unless they book on-site tent hire arranged through a partner. Entry pricing is tiered (early bird, standard, late) and a portion of entry fees supports I Am Hope and Bowel Cancer New Zealand.
