Alaska Salmon Runs at Copper River Salmon Jam
The Alaska Salmon Runs take place in Cordova, covering various distances through the Copper River delta. The event honors the five native species of salmon and follows a point-to-point route through a diverse natural environment. Runners traverse the historic Copper River railroad route, which remains mostly flat as it sits at sea level.
The course features different terrains, starting with gravel road for the first half of the marathon distance and transitioning to paved surfaces. The landscape includes views of glaciers, mountains, and wildflowers such as lupine and fireweed. The final 10 km of the race follow the shores of Eyak Lake. Because the route passes through wild areas, participants may occasionally see local wildlife such as moose or bears.
Participants can choose from the following distances:
- King Salmon Marathon
- Sockeye Half-Marathon
- Coho 10K
- Humpy 5K
- Smolt 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk
Race headquarters is located at the Cordova Community Medical Center parking lot. For all events except the one-mile run, a shuttle bus transports runners from the headquarters to their respective start lines. Water stations are positioned every 4 to 5 miles along the course. All marathon and half-marathon finishers receive a medal, and place awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers in each category during a salmon BBQ lunch.
