Airdrie Backyard Ultra
The Airdrie Backyard Ultra is held in Airdrie, Alberta, featuring a format centered on endurance rather than speed. Participants must complete a 6.706 km (4.167 miles) loop every hour. To continue in the event, runners must start each new lap exactly on the hour and finish within the 60 minute time limit.
The course starts and finishes at the grandstands of Ed Eggerer Athletic Park. From the track, the route transitions onto a paved pathway surrounding East Lake and continues through local neighborhoods. The stadium setting provides lighting for participants who continue running into the evening and night.
A basic aid station providing water, electrolytes, and snacks is located at the start and finish area. Participants and their support crews have access to the amenities at the adjacent Genesis Place complex. Crews are permitted to set up in a designated infield area between loops; however, pacers are not allowed on the course at any time.
Mandatory gear for participants includes hydration, nutrition, extra clothing, and a headlamp for night running. The event takes place regardless of rain, with pauses only occurring in the event of extreme weather such as lightning.
