40/50 Mile Challenge - Deer Grove East
The 40/50 Mile Challenge is a continuous loop trail race held at Deer Grove East Forest Preserve in Palatine, IL (1599 Pepper Tree Dr). Competitors run repeated loops on a 3.1 mile (5K) course until they reach their chosen distance or the 12 hour time limit. The event is scored separately from The Next Loop Endurance Series, though both use the same loop.
The course winds through restored prairie, open wetlands, oak savanna, and shaded woodland corridors. Trails include a mix of paved and natural surfaces with primarily flat to gently rolling terrain. Runners encounter expansive views across grassland and wetland habitats as well as periodic shade and varied footing.
Logistics emphasize centralized support. Each lap returns to the same start and finish area with a fully stocked aid station. Runners have access to a designated personal staging area near the start and may retrieve personal supplies each loop. Crew access is permitted in designated areas and pacers are allowed subject to event rules. Medical and race staff are on site throughout the event.
The format removes navigation concerns and provides constant access to aid and crew support. Distances offered: Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
