40/50 Mile Challenge - Busse Woods
The 40/50 Mile Challenge is a continuous loop endurance race held on the Busse Woods Loop Trail in Ned Brown Forest Preserve near Elk Grove, IL. The course uses a 3.1 mile (5K) loop and offers two distance options with a 12 hour time limit. The event runs simultaneously with The Next Loop Endurance Series on the same course; Next Loop participants run on the hour while 40/50 Mile Challenge competitors run continuously and are scored separately.
The trail winds through mature woodlands, open meadows, lakeside sections, and a shaded forest canopy. The surface is primarily smooth crushed limestone and packed gravel with occasional paved connector sections. Terrain is mostly flat and non technical. Runners return each lap to the same centralized start and finish area where a fully stocked aid station is available on every lap.
Support and logistics include a designated personal staging area near the start and finish for supplies each loop, crew access in designated areas, pacers allowed per event rules, and medical and race staff on site. Participants complete repeated loops until they reach their chosen distance or the time limit expires. Registration is limited to preserve course quality and runner support.
